In Finland, all children from the age of 7 up to 16 have to attend Comprehensive school. School starts in the year when a child reaches the age of 7 (for example, children born in 2010 will start school in autumn 2017). School ends when you have finished the syllabus of comprehensive school. Children are in comprehensive school for 9 years.
Teaching, books and food are free of charge in comprehensive school. Families need to buy children a schoolbag, pencil case and sports clothing. There are no school uniforms in Finland.
During the academic year in Kerava, teachers and parents keep contact regularly through a web interface called Wilma. Through Wilma you will get information about school events, your child's grades and other matters about the child's school.
During Preparatory Education, a child learns the Finnish language and becomes familiar with Finnish schools. Education lasts for one (1) school year. After the preparatory instruction pupils move to a classroom with children of corresponding age.
In Elementary School, children study the following subjects: Finnish Language and Literature, Swedish, English and other languages selected by the student, environmental studies, health education, religion or ethics, history, social studies, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Physical Education, Music, Visual arts, Handicrafts and Home Economics. In addition, the students can choose subjects that interest them.
Finnish as a second language (S2) is taught to students whose native language is other than Finnish.
Comprehensive school offers classes in the child's own religion, if a group can be formed with enough pupils. Religious education may take place in the child's own school or in another school.
In comprehensive school, a child can participate in the teaching of his/her own native language. Teaching may take place in the child's own or in another school. The school will not arrange transportation.
When you move to Kerava, register your child in school.
