Värkkäämö Makerspace
The library’s Värkkäämö Makerspace offers the opportunity to digitise analogue recordings, make 3D prints or vinyl stickers, or try out vinyl printing on your own fabric. In Media room you can listen to and play music. This page provides information on how to book and use the equipment.
The equipment is intended for private use only, not for commercial purposes.
-
The media room on the ground floor of the library holds equipment that can be used independently and free of charge to convert
- C cassettes to CDs,
- LP to CDs,
- slides and photo negatives (slide, 35-mm film and 120-mm film) to a USB flash drive or external hard drive, or
- VHS cassettes or VHS-C cassettes to a USB flash drive, an external hard drive or a DVD. We recommend an external hard drive or a USB flash drive. Note! VHS digitization is currently not available due to a faulty device.
In the media room, you can also listen to CDs, LPs, and cassettes, as well as play the library’s loanable musical instruments.
Keep these points in mind
- You may only convert material which you have the right to copy.
- You should set aside at least one and a half times the time it takes to listen to or view the recording at normal speed.
- The devices also have a recording option, and VHS digital conversion has the possibility of minor edits.
- You can borrow a VHS-C adapter for small VHS cassettes from the library.
- The library does not have a device for converting the 8-mm cassettes or narrow-gauge film used by some video cameras to a digital format.
- It is recommended that you always use a USB flash drive or external hard drive for the digital conversion of slides, films or VHS cassettes.
- You can also use regular discs sold in shops: DVD-R for video cassettes and CD-R for music. If you bring your own disc, please check that nothing is already stored on it. You can also purchase blank discs from the library for €2 each.
- If the original quality of the recording is poor, it will not improve when digitised.
- Digitisation is done at your own risk. The library will not compensate for any damage to the original material.
